Got a chance to buy a 305 for 200 bucks, guy says its a 92. Got a 79 impalla with a tired 305. Will the 92 bolt up to my torque converter, trans, motor mounts,& exhaust manifolds. Was going to use the intake, carb, and distributor off the 79 motor.Thats my plan, but don't want to buy the thing unless I know it'll work. Thanks in advance. |

| Thanks for the responses, think I'll rebuild the 79. Want it to be the last car I ever have. Don't care for the new ones. |

| Norbo, Jon H nailed it. If you get an after market intake for this engine swap, and use the flywheel for the 92, or one from the late 80's it will work. Two guys here have done this swap. One has a 4 barrel carb adapted to a fuel injected intake. the other guy slotted the 4 center bolt holes in his old intake and stuck it on the late engine. old model intakes will match up to late engines, except for the 4 center intake bolts. | Thats the adantage of Chevys, they normal were interchangable between years unlike ford where you needed to make some modfications. You shouldn't have any problems. You might have some emission stuff that will need pluged but the motormounts and tranny/bell housing should match up. Never done it on a 305 but just about every other chev motor. |

| Chevys great interchangability went out the window almost 20 years ago.86 and newer have 1 piece rear main seal which requires a totally different flexplate/flywheel with different crankshaft bolt pattern and balance than your 79 has. Your 79 torque converter may or may not fit a 92 flexplate. Also, some of the later fuel injected smallblock chevys have the intake manifold bolts angled differently in the heads than a 79,so your intake manifold may not bolt up.A 92 block may not have any provisions for a mechanical fuel pump. Expect lots of changes or go with a pre 86 engine. |
