I just got a 48 dodge, was having problems getting it started and running. The person I got it from said they changed oil and plugs just before shipping to me. I checked the plugs and found them to be in the incorrect firing order per the manuel so changed them... I still have the same problem.. I have since been told that if a previous owner installed a distribuor drive gear a few teeth off or if the distributor has been rebuilt it would make the notches meaningless. Can someone tell me how to figure out the firing order and make sure I have wires connected correctly in both places??? Even if there are any other problems I need to work this out first to make sure I have the ability to start. Help will be greatly appreciated!!!!! Cheryl |

| Thanks Kent, it is a flathead. I have printed out your advise and will tinker with it tomorow afternoon. I'll keep my fingers crossed I get it right. I had the firing order but somehow think I have messed it up attaching the wires to the distributer. Maybe I am off one. In anycase I should be able to get it figured out now. Thanks! Hopefully I won't have to post any more on this issue. Thanks again!Cheryl |

| | Is this engine a Flat-head six? If so the firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4. Bring number one,the front cyl. to Top dead center, Turn the distributor until the point are just open. Install the number one plug wire in the hole of the distributor cap that the bugg is pointing at. Ad the other wire in the order above in the same rotation as the distributor turns. Kent |

| Just to add that you must be sure that #1 cylinder is on the compression stroke at TDC. Check this by turning the engine slowly with your thumb in #1 plug hole. When you feel/hear air pressure as the piston comes up,you know you are on the compression stroke. Otherwise if by chance the #1 cylinder was coming up to TDC on the exhaust stroke, the distributor rotor would be 180 degrees out from the #1 ignition position. |
