I have come across a ½ ton 5 window Chevy for sale that is in need of a steering box.

I know where there is a 3/4 ton chassis that has been sanded, primed, and painted, and set up for a V-8 with automatic transmission, and it has a steering box. It is an Ebay item that didn't sell.

Rather than just robbing the steering box I'm wondering about just moving the body of the ½ on over onto it.

Since I have been dealing with my 1 ton straight frame chassis I know nothing about the differences between the 3/4 ton and the 1/2 ton.

Would one of you enlighten me please.

Thanks!

I think the cab is the same and will switch over to the 3/4 ton chassis. The 3/4 ton has a full floating rear axle instead of the semi floating acle on the half ton, which is the same type as on passenger cars. The wheelbase is longer, too. The pickup box has three stake pockets on each side on the 3/4 ton where the 1/2 ton has two on each side. I never had the half ton, so I don't know if the steering gear box is the same. I don't think you'll have trouble with the wiring.

everythig is the same except the frames after the rear cab mounts the frame widens out to 4' on a 3100 and the 3600 stays in a straight line and is only 3' so if you do your swap you'll need to find diffrent rear bumper brackets because of frame location

Thanks for the run down.

Wiring should be a snap as I'm rewiring my one ton. Sidecutters and 100' rolls of wire are our friends. Well, let's not forget connectors, that anti-oxidizing copper/aluminum stuff, and shrink tubing.

That's the way to go with the wireing. I pull a utility trailer that I load with scrap metal. besides running wiring through pipe I have clearance lights protected inside channel and angle. Soldering the joints and waterproofing them really make the wiring low maintenance. There can be a lot of slush in the winter, and they remain dependable in the worst of weather. I've installed Truck Lite LED's, too. The LED's lowered the draw of electric so much that the thermal turn signal flasher wouldn't work, and I had to put an electronic flasher in place of the thermal flasher. Truck Lite has really lowered the prices on LED's.

We are of like minds. I am running the wiring through ½" PVC conduit. Solid PVC for the straight runs and then a tough flexible ½" PVC to each lamp. Under the hood where the wiring is higher up on the vehicle I am using a lighter weight flex tubing rather than the heavy weight. I only want to do it once.

I have catalogs from the local NAPA dealer that shows Grote brand LEDS as well as all of their lighting available. The day I picked them up a Grote representative was on site with a display trailer showing all of the different LED units.

Jennifer, the store owner, has offered me some special reduced prices on the lights if I go that route. It is just a matter of making selections and ordering. The prices she offered compared favorably to those I found on Ebay.

I pull a 16' tailer with my 3800. It has electric brakes on it as well as conventional lighting. So far I've never run into electrical low battery problems. When I converted my '49 to 12 volts I put on a 60 amp alternator because I still have the small battery under the floor.

I appreciate you help. Like the old slogan said, "Keep on Truckin".

The steering box is the same from a halfton all the way to the two ton with the possible exception of the coe models. The stake pocket have nothing to do with the size i have a 51 halfton with three andd a 49 with two ever saw a pickup with four stake pockets and a frame thats been extended about 2 feet it would be a one longhorn. I also had a 3/4 ton with two pockets its just the lenght of the box. I don't beleive you would have any problems changing the body over as long as you body isn't roached. But why take all that time. just put 3/4 axles and springs under the half ton.

Thanks for the info.

The 3/4 ton chassis has already been cleaned up primed, painted, etc. The 1/2 ton would have to be done from scratch, i.e. rust removed, etc.

I would actually rather have the cushy 1/2 ton chassis and relegate heavier chores to my one ton.

I did get the 1/2 ton pickup purchased and will go get it today.

I own a 47 3/4 ton and making a 1/2 ton swap/suspension upgrade, I got the front end covered (mustang II), but have no idea what or how to tackle the rear. I would think this is a common swap. Anyone know what my options are?
