Just bought a '77 chevy 1/2 ton in pretty decent shape. Looking for some general info on it. What years was this body style produced? I'm not quite sure how the 4x4 works. The decal on the visor reads "full time 4x4" The shifter positions are Low Loc, Low, N, High, and High Loc. It has lockout hubs. Can someone give me a run down on what each position does and what I should be doing? Also, the fuel guage is pegged all of the way towards full. If nessacary, how big of a job is it to replace the guage and sender? These might sound like stupid questions, but please remember that I'm young and haven't been around a pickup like this since I was a small kid. |

If this truck has lockouts and an automatic transmission most likely a part time 4wd kit was installed. There were many kits available and some certainly better than others. The common thread for the kits was engagement. When in H or L range it will be in 2 wd, when the lever is in HL,High Lock or LL, Low lock it engages the center differential in the transfer case and gives you 4wd.

To check a guage and see if it's working you ground the sending unit wire and it should go full up, so, I'd say look for a pinched or bare sender wire.

jd jim, This system is IMO one of the better system GM made. It allowed The opition of having a Low-2 opition, without havein to engageing the 4x4 porition. My old 80 3/4 ton 4x4 didn't have that transfer case. So for me to have a low 2....I had to leave my hubs in the FREE position and simply pull the transfer case into 4 low. i used this checking cattle, driveing fence, getting heavy loads moveing. etc, etc. Other than that position on your transfer case it work just like any other 4x4 system. Hope this helps. Later, John A.

The basic body style was from 1973-1980. The hood was slightly differant on the 1980. The cab was similar on the 81-87. They had changeover kits to allow part time 4wd. The full time did not have lockouts and the had a differential in the transfer case. I don't remember how the 4wd worked with the conversion worked.
