What motors can I swap in place of the old 292? I have a nice rebuilt 428 police interceptor and was wondering if it would bolt up? bellhouseing, clutch, input shaft? etc. The 292 has really milky oil, i think that maybea head gasket has gone bad...ideas?

You will probally run into problems with the 330 flywheel as mentioned in another followup. The 428 and mercury 410 are the only external balanced FE car motors. I'm not sure about the 330, but I think it was internal balance. We have swapped many 390's (same mounting as a 428 but is internal balanced) into '53 thru 60's ford F250's thru F750's. If you use a 391 Truck engine's flywheel, clutch, and bell housing along with front mount this is very simple. This also gets you a big hefty 13" clutch. The 391 flywheel needs to be zero balanced (very easy for any engine shop, involves grinding off a cast-in weight) to match a car 390 (internally balanced) for this to work. You may also be able to have the machine shop balance the 391 flywheel to match the original external balanced 428 flywheel. The front mount can be bolted to the 428/390 car timing cover with longer high strenght bolts and some heavy wall tubing for spacers. With the correct lenght spacers you can mount this engine in the original frame mounts as the 292. One tip, make sure you get a flywheel and bellhousing that match. The early 330 belhousing will bolt to the block the same as a 391 bell, but the starter hole is in a different location because the 391 has a bigger flywheel dia. This is all pretty easy to do if you get the right parts and get the balancing correct.

Nothing from the 292 will bolt to anything except other early Y blocks, the 428 takes a special flywheel, other FE engines like 332, 352, 360, 390 work real good. Its a simple swap with them, from a truck salvage yard, pick up a light duty, 330 flywheel, only a light duty 330 flywheel will work, also get the bellhousing, it will bolt down same place as the 292, get the timing cover from the light duty 330, its cast iron, and the front mount that goes with it. You will need to weld a piece of iron onto the front cross member for the front mount to bolt onto, get a clutch and preasure plate and starter for the light duty 330, and you're in bussness. The exhaust will be easy to fabrecate.

55 ford bellhousings mounted in the same place, they used the same style engines as the 1960 models did, I won't carve it in stone that it will, but I don't see why it won't. If you know the where abouts of a early to mid 60s truck, do a little measureing between it and yours, and see what you come up with.
