Truck has been to two repair shops, they say they have replaced plug wires, plugs, points, condenser, coil and coil wires, checked timing, etc. The skip will almost smooth out at very high RPM but is very noticeable at low RPM. It is a constant skip, it does not change or vary, always there. There is an overall loss of power, hard to make even small hills without down shifting to increase RPM. There is some blue smoke from the tailpipe after coasting down a hill and then acceleration. Repair shops said they did a compression check and valves and rings were not great but OK. Maybe I should change all the items I mentioned above myself just to be sure? Could the valve timing be off a tooth? Hmmm. Any other things I should look at that might cause this constant skip? Thanks for your input. |

Bob, from what you said there is a burnt valve in one cylinder, you can hold a piece of paper close to the tail pipe and see if it is pulled back to the pipe, if it does then you can hunt for the weak cylinder, post back with the results of paper test. Dan

| | Yes, the paper test does "pop" back and forth into the tailpipe. You can hear the rough idle of the engine in unison with paper moving also. I will look for my compression gauge (that I have not seen in years) and see if I can find that weak cylinder. I tried to look into the distributor but the cap was stuck on -- could not get it off and didn't want to hit it with anything hard. Will try my rubber mallet tomorrow. Thanks for the tips. Bob |

Bob, check the valve adjustment, could be a valve that is a little tight, I don't remember the specks off hand. Dan

I have looked around the internet for valve settings but can't find numbers for this year truck. Is there a good place on the web for Chevy truck spects?

If its the original 6 cyl, the valves set at .012 for the intake, .020 for the exhaust. I'd also check for a weak or broken valve spring.

I have to disagree on the setting. seems .006 and .013 was the factory setting. Doesn't hurt to go .008 and .015, may be slightly noisier.

I've see some other numbers also Allan, I guess somewhere in the middle so the valves are not too tight to burn and not too noisy would be OK for now.

Thanks for the settings Dave, I think this is the original engine. I'll take a look at the springs when I check/set the valves.

I had something like this on a 54 ford 6cyl. It was a bad plug wire(carbon). Check each wire on an ohmmeter. Seems like 2000 ohms per foot. Also crimps on ends could be open and spark could still jump across. Had a set of Sears wires that all 8 were bad. Crimped terminals tight and all were good. Old mechanic no longer with us told me this could also be caused by head gasket allowing couple drops of coolant into combustion chamber. Could plug gaps be too wide? Please tell us what happens. Copper wires should read like 0-3 or 4 ohms max.

The wires do look "home made" and appear old. I'll check these also. The radiator contents are lower than I remember and I don't see any wet spots under the engine, maybe there is a small leak into the combustion chambers. Thanks for the info. I don't know when I'll get to do this maintenance now, the truck belongs to my boss and she has found lots of other things for me do around the farm this summer! I'll let you know what I find.
