I'm working on a 1941 1/2 ton truck with the standard 216 engine in it. Talking with a guy who specializes in these engines and parts, he suggested not rebuilding the 216 and instead putting in a 234, which I also have access to.

I'm not necessarily interested in building a show-quality truck, so I'm not worried about that, but is there anything that I should know in particular about putting a 234 in that would make it less appealing than rebuilding the 216?

As I remember it, the only change you'll need to make is to push the water pump hub back on the shaft and use a shorter length pulley on it - and cut off the protruding shaft. The 235 is slightly longer than the 216. If you need a rebuildable 235, I've got one, guts, feathers, and all.

Thanks for the comments and for the offer. I have a full 235 already, but I'll keep it in mind.

What's your asking price?

go with the 235, but make sure it has full oil pressure to the rods as some of the early ones didn't... the 216 has the splash oil system with dippers on the rods that dipped oil for lubing the rod bearing..also the rod bearing is a babbit type and not an insert type as the later 235..the 235 is a much better engine... it also has more power...

Thanks for the comments. I really appreciate it, and it makes me feel better about the choice. I knew the 216 had babbit bearings, which can be a real bear to deal with, and the 235 has the modern insert types. That was a good thing in my mind.

The extra power is ok as well, but this will just be a tool-around-town type vehicle.
