Well Jon, It finally occured to me to just pull all the wires off the run position post of the ignition switch and replace one by one to isolate which wire provided power to the gauges. Did this and found the wire(only one I thought). I spliced in the CVR from the run pole on ign. switch to ign. pole on CVR. Other pole on CVR spliced to wire previously determined was providing power to gauges. Turned on the switch. Fuel and temp gauges worked as predicted.
Only thing was that prior to splicing in CVR with all wires connected to ign. switch, I turned key to run position and noted the amp meter was getting power as it registered a slight discharge.
Am I going to have to go back in there and chase down power to ampmeter and isolate it with the CVR also or will it be ok on 12V. Haven't changed the wire going thru the loop on back of amp meter gauge yet but know what to do there from your previous posts.
Small baby step here but I feel I am making big headway!

Sounds good on the gauge power. You have the case/mounting lug of the CVR connected to a good ground ? It must be grounded to work correctly.

The amp gauge only reads amps entering or leaving the battery,it does not care if the current is 6 or 12 volts. leave it as it is. The amp gauge must NOT be connected through the CVR. Sounds like your doing fine with your 12V conversion, good luck and keep us informed of your progress.

Jon, you just made my day. Next step will be to reverse the wire direction thru the loop on the ampmeter and chase down the power leads to wiper and heater. I'll put a resistor in there on both unless it is a common lead. I"LL BE BACK! as Arnold would say.

Thanks

The ammeter SHOULD show a discharge with the key "ON", as the power for the gauges and any accessories that are "ON" is going through the ammeter, not to mention ignition system load, if the engine has stopped at a point in it's rotation where the breaker points are CLOSED.

The Ammeter is powered by the magnetic field surrounding the wire that passes through it (if it is an "inductive ammeter", or by the magnetic field surrounding it's internal shunt (if it is a shunt-type ammeter).

Tha ammeter is NOT powered through the Instrument Voltage regulator.

SO, GREAT NEWS... NO worries!
