Hi Folks;I've been offered a mint condition 1951 2-ton Chev dump truck, with 6-cyl engine. It's ex-Canadian Air Force, with 43,000 miles on it. 1. Does anyone know what this vehicle might be worth? I've trolled through the internet, but can't find anything similar. Asking price is CAN$10,000 or US$8,000. 2. The truck's a 10 hour drive from me, in northern Ontario. I'll therefore have to buy it sight unseen. Can these trucks keep up with modern traffic? What kind of speed will it cruise at on the highway? The horsepower seems to be about 92 from what I can find, so I don't expect much. I'd love to tow with it (car trailer with our 1958 Triumph sports car on board), but I have a feeling the truck couldn't cope, especially on hills. Any comments? Thanks; Tim |

| | $8,000 sounds terribly high to me. It would have to be in perfect condition to bring anywhere near that price. Several problems come to mind if you want a big truck to use on modern highways. 1. Max speed is about 55 mph without a load. 2. No power steering or power brakes. 3. Puny windsheild wipers. Probably vacume operated. 4. Possible split rim wheels which means no tire shop will touch them when you get a flat. There's probably more reasons that I haven't thought of. If you want a truck to drive to shows or around town on pretty days, then that truck will do you just fine. If you want a truck to use and be reliable, i'd recommend a 70's or newer one-ton truck and a trailer. Much more user-fiendly, much more reliable, much more comfortable. Just my $.02 worth, OK-AL |

| They are a wonderful old truck, but don't expect much over 45 mph without the engine really screaming. The price is right if you want it, and with that low mileage it will last you forever. 92 horsepower sounds quite optimistic, to say the least. It likely has a 2-speed, and you'll need that every time you come to a hill. I'm still herding my '48 GMC - those old beasts are nearly indestructable. Don't be in a hurry to get anywhere, just enjoy the trip. |

| Drive the 10 hours and take money. Too much for a pig in a poke. In my experience these deals always are not as good as expected. You could send deposit of say $100 bucks if you feel real good. Lose it if you are wrong. |
