i want to replace my old 223 eng. and standard 4-speed transmission for auto transmission & engine. what year is the newest that will bolt in with the least modifications.

That's an easy truck for a swap..You can put almost anything in there.. Probably a 302 with a c4 might be a good choice.. But no matter what you put in there, you will have to make some parts, such as brackets for the engine mounts and other stuff..
Many years ago, I had a 1961 f-100 with a 223 and 3 speed transmission...I swapped in a 302 with a 3 speed, it worked great, lots more power and better gas mileage.. drove it several years and no problems...
At another time I had a 1964 f-100 and I put a Pontiac GTO 389 engine in it...It was also an easy swap...
