I have had both 400m and 460 engines. The 400 is a good eng made just for trucks with alot of torque for pulling or just being a strong truck. The 460 eng is one of the toughest engs built. My most current 460 i just pulled out of my work truck. the truck is a 95 f450 with utiliy body with 3ton crane air comp welder and every door full of tools for heavy equipment repair. Eng has 283000 miles all under extreme conditions. Eng was still running but skipping i tore down and found crank shaft broke. 1 push rod had come threw rocker arm and 5 more push rods were bent. But the old girl never put me down. she was still running when I pulled her out. I was still making service calls around atlanta area until the the day I pulled the eng. FORDS TOUGHEST ENGINES

390 might be hard to find, many hot rod them for performance. Both were excellent engines. 427 Ford engines are hard to find.

No, the 460 is a good engine but the 390 is also a good engine...I would take the 460 over the 390 mainly because it's newer and easier to get parts for...It's also better for performance....

The 460 is a good engine, more power than a 390 which is also a good engine. Your friend may have been thinking of a 400. They were not that great an engine.

I put 241,000 miles on my old crew cab 1977, it had a beefed up C-6 transmission, I put a three speed Brownie Transmission behind the C-6, this was a very nice set up. Another 460 in a 1983 had 155,00 on it when I traded it in on a New 1997 Dodge/Cummins. Both of the 460 engines had never had the heads or pans off of them. As far as know they are both still running strong.

no, i had 80 bronco with a 400 that had a beefy cam and headers and it was great, i have had a lot of luck with 400 fords, they just aren't that good for high performance( 400 hp or more).
