I have a 1971 Ford C900 Firetruck with a 534 and Allison automatic trans. It has been sitting in storage for the last month without being started. I went by yesterday to start it and it would not turn over. It did not make a sound when I turned the key. I keep a battery tender on it so I know the battery has a full charge. Any recommendations on where to start diagnosing the problem?

I tend to agree w/ Kent. Check the MASTER SWITCH which is usually on the floor to the left of the driver's seat. Why Ford put it there is a mystery. But check the switch's position. Listen for the relay's to 'click' in. If the relays make no noise at all then the switch itself is bad and needs to be replaced. The switch also has a tendency to be 'kicked' into the off position because of the location and the turnout gear worn. And remember, due to it's position the switch itself tends to collect every type of crud known to God, to include ROAD SALT !!!

It might not be such a bad idea to get under the frame and see if the switch's contacts or cable/connections are showing signs of corrosion of any type. Replacing a $ 20 cable is awhole lot cheaper than a tow to a shop and the resulting repair bill.

It might be the neutral safety switch. Our department has a 78 C-8000 with an Allison and sometimes you just have to play with the shifter a little bit in neutral while holding the key to start.

If this truck is equipment with a MASTER SWITCH, did you have it on? Most Firetrucks have a MASTER SWITCH to prevent acccidental battery run down. If you had it on you need to start looking for bad conections.
