Most of those would have a 235. You can tell by looking at the thermostat housing and water pump. The 261 has a 3/4 inch 90 degree bypass hose connecting the two, a 235 doesn't. Also, the late 261s had a full flow oil filter mounted on the block, the 235 still had the cannister by-pass oil filter hanging on the intake manifold. And, if my memory serves me, the 235 wass blue, the 261 green. And, the 235 went down the road just fine, the 261 will pass anything going up a hill.

Jerry, You got it pretty well. One more thing. The 261 block has 2 vertical casting bars above the atarter, they are not there on the 235.

My name is Josh, I manage a shop here in town. I had a good customer come in with a 60 Apache, I'd say it was atleast a 20, had a box in it and still six feet to solid fleet side bed. Shes a bright pink, with a 327. THe 3 speed is tired and has no 3rd gear. Was going to go with a m22, but my supplier could not get me one, but he could get me a rebuilt 3 speed. But he took to long, the custoemr got a hold of some guy selling a borg warner t-10 4 speed. My main question is, the output shaft splines are likely incorrect, thus needing to be changed to mate with the chevy patern. What is entailed with doing that swap, and will this trans bolt up? Will the drive line length need to be modified?? And what about the linkage???
