I recently inherited my great grandmothers first car. It is a 1951 Chevy Deluxe. I put a battery in it, turned the key, hit the starter button and it turned over nicely. However, When I shut the key off,hit the starter button, it would still turn over and everything worked just like it did when the key was in the on position. From here, there was no juice to the coil either. Does anybody have any ideas? I am kind of new at this, for I am 17 and just learning. Thankyou very much for all of your help.

All the key really does is turn on/off the power to the distributer (ignition system). Your starter can still be turned over with the key off because the key does not turn off power to the starter system. HTH Bill

Ah yes, brings back many fond memories. 49-52 Chev switches. If it is the original, the switch has 3 positions. Key can be removed in any position.
Handy feature as you can leave motor running & remove key to open trunk, garage door etc, or just leave key in pocket.
Turn to the left-off & locked, straight up-on, turn to right-off but not locked. There should be 2 little "ears" so you can turn it back & forth between "on" & "right side off" with the key removed. 49-50 had just 1 "ear" at bottom, 51-52 had 2 "ears", top & bottom.
Try turning key to center"straight up" position. Gas gauge should jump up & heater blower should work. That is the "run" position.
Has been a long time, but if my memory is right, Chev & Olds had 6 volt, NEGATIVE ground battery, everything else was POSITIVE ground.
Enjoy your car, was a well built machine, just not a high speed cruiser.
Send me an e-mail for more info.
HTH
Willie
