I have a 1961 chevy pick up with a 235 six cylinder that is not running well. The engine will idle for days but when I get going in third gear it acts like it is running out of gas and spits back and shuts off. I have cleaned the tank, changed the coil, changed to an electric fuel pump, changed plugs wires, points, condenser, and the engine still dies when there is a load put on it. My next step is to change to an HEI distributor but if anybody has had this problem and can give me some answers I would really appriciate it. Thanks

I agree with fuel starvation, but after all you've done, and a new fuel filter, I'd look inside the carb. Those old Rochester carbs had some places inside that could plug or varnish up giving problems. Also, be sure you don't have a gasket pluging the hole in the bottom or the baase of the carb that controls the power valve piston. Manifold vaccum controls it, and if it doesn't get the proper vacuum, it can leave the power valve closed, meaning fuel starvation.

I agree . Sounds like the fuel filter. I had the same problem on a 91 silverado.

check out several things, at idle, when you goose the throttle by hand does it spit then or drop in rpm, then pick up strong? check the accelerator pump in the carb, and also the vacuum advance on the distributor, make sure that is working, and has good steady vacuum to it, off the manifold not the carb, make sure you have at least 4 to 7 lbs of pressure from the fuel pump, check the float level in the carb if thats too low it may be running out of gas at higher rpm, also check your timing and make sure thats corect, post back with results

Rick,

There is no reason why you shouldn't be able to get the original distributor to work well as long as it isn't worn out. It sounds like you could have a bad fuel filter. I would check that next. Keep us posted on your progress.

Bill
