OK Mack guys, Here"s one for you..I drive a "98 Mack for snowplowing..I blew an axle shaft on it today..[rt side]..I drive it like I paid for it...No Lie.... Allison World trans. HD 6 speed..On a forward to reverse shift, I heard a bang..It backed up OK..When I shifted to forward it made a noise , like at every rotation of axle.. Hitched a ride back to shop, loaded my pickup with tools , pulled the axles and got it ready for a tow back to the shop..Can"t for the life of me understand why?? The other Mack went thru 3 axles in it"s life ..I sorta thought it was being horsed around , now not so sure..It was a 6 speed stick..Are they a weak link?? I wouldn"t think so...Any ideas....Thanks

My grandfather was a long time mack dealer in Ohio and a broken axle shaft while not unheard of is something we seldom seen.

The bulk of his customers trucks were lowboy tractors, coal haulers, and oil field trucks.

we built many blown rears but dident see many axle problems.

Sorry I cant really give you a answer to your problem.

As for axle shafts being designed as a "safety valve" to protect the ring and pinion..... thats a load of bunk.

they are made to give like a sheasr bolt so you don't over torque the diff and destroy the ring and pinnion .
