I just had the bottom end of my 1960 292 rebuilt, IE new bearing's timing chain and gears. Now it idle's ok but misfires terribly when under any kind of load. I made sure that the "dot's" on the timing gears were the correct 12 pins apart. So I cant figure out what I did wrong.

But Brooke

If ya put in new timing gear. You said the timing chain was sloppy loose so the new spark is likely advanced several degrees from the worn position. Yea the distributor is rusted in place and ya can't move it. Soak that raskel two times a day with penatrate. Or maybe break it down again and hammer it out so ya can move it.

I managed to get rid of the mis by re adjusting the valves. So now it actually runs pretty great. Still cant move the distributor, but I've only been soaking it for a couple of day's

Well so far I have managed to eliminate spark, fuel and cam timing as the misfire culprit. A week before replacing the timing chain and gear set I adjusted all the valves to the point were the old girl was as quite as a mouse. What I didnt realize was that the timing chain was extremely loose and the timing pretty far off. Now with the new [tight] chain Im thinking that the timing is correct and the valves are way too tight. I'm gonna try to find time today to adjust the valves again and see what happen's.

According to Motors Truck Repair Manual, Ford Standard Trucks: 1960 Ford 292: Plugs BTF-6, Plug gap .030, Point gap .015, Timing mark 6 degrees BTDC, Valve seat angle 45 degrees, Valve clearance .019 hot intake and exhaust, Valve spring installed height 1 25/32.
Distributor Specs.: Cam angle degrees 26-28, Breaker arm spring tension 17-20, Centrifugal advance degrees @ RPM of distributor Advance starts 1@700 Full advance 10@1800,(two barrel carb.)
Don"t know if any of this will help, hope so, if I can provide anymore information for you just let me know. Good luck, Warren

Did you adjust the distributor timing to compensate for the new gears and chain?

I have a hard time believing it's the distributer. Before putting in the new bearing's at actually ran great. it just had no oil pressure and the rear seal leaked like a seive. The other problem is that the distributer is rusted in place and wont move for hell or high water.

yeah, it probebly did run good before, but what I'm trying to say is, if the distributor was timed for the slack in the timing gears and chain, and now with new timing componets, the distributor timing is going to be way off.

most likly an ignition problem... with engine running, i always pull a plug wire to see the spark..it should jump 3/4 inch or better..do all plug wires... be careful them wires do bite..i use plastic pliers for that... also check the plugs and the gap...should be .035....
