A '56 might have had the engine swapped by now. All the SD/BG/BD sixes had "220" stamped into the oil pan.My '51 L-110 with the original SD-220 and the add-on factory option oil filter [they weren't standard equipment, as I understand it] takes the 1156. My '52 L-110, which has a later-vintage BD-264 installed by a previous owner, takes the equivalent of a Fram CH-333-PL oil filter [same filter they used on '59-'67 IH pickups/Travelalls with V8's equipped with the OE canister oil filter]. This might be what your truck takes as well. |

| Thanks for the info Buzzman. I went out and looked at the build sheet this am. It does call out a 'deluxe oil filter'. The filter that came out of it had a cloth surround and a little folding handle that you lifted it up with. No numbers though. What do the sd,bg,bd letters indicate? |

| | The SD is the Silver Diamond series of engines, and included the SD-220 and SD-240. The BD is the Black Diamond engine series, and included the BD-220, BD-240, and the BD-264. The BG is a revised series of the BD engines, [some say it was for "Blue-Gray," but I'm not sure about that] and they are identical to the BD engines excep for the PCV valve system rather than still venting blow-by to the atmosphere via the road draft tube on the valve cover on the side of the block. IH used two suppliers for their oil filters, DeLuxe and Michiana. The Michiana seems to have a "lift ring" on the element itself, while the DeLuxe is what we always called a "sock" filter, and the bail on the little basket--IH called it a "sump" in the parts book--that holds the filter is what's used to lift the filter element out of the housing. But my parts books only go through the L-series trucks. |

| thanks all for the info. I did visit with my Napa parts guy today and we did get out the old parts books and look at measuremts. FYI the fram filter (333) crosses to the 1156 Napa filter which is too wide (4.53"). My deluxe (sock filter) is only about 4.25" wide and sits on top of a sumpcup that catches sludge. We settled on a Napa 1006 and tomorrow I'll see if it fits. Looking also for a book that details out the difference in 1950's IH trucks if there is such an animal out there. Thx again! |
