I see you have gotten yourself a green leaker. the oil leak is a slight concern. if you keep the rpm's above 1900-2000 Rpm's, it shouldn't leak oil. these engines were made for the oil feild. 1900 to 2100 is the operating rage for the 2 cycle detroit engines. these engines are the 53, 71, and 92 series. Dont get these engines in a bind because they will start to run backwards and if you dont shut them down or (choke them out) all the oil will get pumped out the intake! YES THIS WILL HAPPEN!!! As far as the oil leak, DO NOT return it to the crankcase no matter what the cost. The oil that comes out is EXTREMELY DIRTY! returning the oil wil cause bearing failure. when they were designed, they wernt equiped with a passage for the oil to return back to the crankcase. Not sure where you can get them but ther are guidelines that were published for your engine. you might be able to try Ebay. i was able to find a ton of stuff for the 2 cycle detroit. You will need to know if it has Detroit Diesel Electronic Controls (DDEC), What generation it is Example. (DDEC4) Detroit Diesel Electronic Controls 4th Generation. the most comon DDEC software for these engines is the DDEC3. I hope my comments were any help to you. Kyle

Hi, I worked on city buses about 5 years. The biggest problem as they got older was rust above the drive axle. Removing the floor above the diff to replace the bulkheads and torque arm mounts. Also dangerous if you try to support the body and it has air ride suspension. Jack on the body for any reason, trip a leveling valve and you can have all the weight on one jacking point. Van lines (furniture movers) used them for years. Drivers used to laugh and say they threw out the 1st gallon of oil after an oil change, then ran pretty good. They said the could garontee that they'd be 1 gal low on oil 100 miles from where they had it changed. Course they were using the 6V71's.

I used to work on a lot of heads from the Detroit Diesels. the 71 series has 4 exhaust valves per cylinder with the injector centered in the middle. The intake are ports on the side of the cylinders that the piston uncovers. The heads crack between valve seats. The valve seats can be knocked out, the cracks can usually be repaired with tapered plugs, and the seat bore can be recut for new seats. More extensively the heads can crack into the injector port which has a copper sleeve sealing the water jacket. We were not able to repair these cracks in the shop I worked for, but other shops could fix them, and install a new copper sleeve. Those shops welded cracks, our shop didn't weld. Water in the combustion chamber will make parts look like a sponge. Also, I found a lot of ports blocked with a gooey sludge that sandblasting wouldn't touch.

I can tell you lots. Green leakers are some of the most bulletproof diesel engines ever made. If it works good, it will for a long time. Check for water in the base. Oil will look like vanilla shake. Check for fuel in the base. Oil stinks like fuel. These are the 2 most common serious problems that result in catastrophic failure. It is a 2 stroke. This what makes the unmatched DD sound. Look after it.they are a dying breed.

Thank you guys, I am going to take it on a test drive to see how it runs, what should I look for to spot problems? I hear the cooling systems on the buses are often ignored and sometimes cause problems, how much oil leaking is normal? how hard/expensive is it to fix the oil leaks? I know the guy that owns the bus fleet that it is from, and he is really particular about proper care. Thank you for the info, Chris

There aint no such thing as getting all the oil leaks out of one of them screaming type Detroit engines.

Just power wash the engine and compartment once a month if the mess bothers you.

When it's brand new that engine will leak/use about 1 gal of oil every 1000 miles.

The best thing about that type detroit is the cold weather cranking. At 10* below shoot the ether to it and if the batteries will growl it over at all you're off and running.

The next best thing about that engine is the sound. That's the sweetest sounding engine under a load there ever was.

Them V blocks have a breather tube sticking down behind the engine just ahead of the flywheel. If the tubes are huffing pressure the motor needs built. If it aint huffing vapor the engine is usually good.

Just don't baby or lug it around. Stick yer foot in it and stay there.

And don't worry about low oil pressure. If it has 40-45 psi, that's alot for that engine.
