A common sense vehicle hasn"t been made in many, many, many years. Wouldn"t we all love to go back to the days of standard transmissions, rubber floor mats, roll up windows, head room, bench seats. etc. Unless you buy something built before the mid 60"s their is no such thing as a common sense vehicle.

I just bought a 1988 Ford Ranger that has all of those features! 2.3L engine, 4X4, 5 speed tranny. Now, it does need some paint and interior work. But still, I think I will only have about $2500 into it when I get it fixed up.

My common sense for my daughter (same age/situation - different gender)dictates something reliable that won't leave her stranded (like a Toyota), not as big an issue for guys maybe?

She started out in a '96 Subaru with 280,000 miles but for the college commute we needed something newer and with airbags for my peace of mind...

With my experience with Toyotas I'd have to say a Toyota pickup. But my experience with the 1st gen Dodge Cummins is equally loyal. If he wants a diesel that will do but they are getting rare and pricey.

I also like the 50's-60's cars and trucks, but for a common sense vehicle, to drive everday, I wouldn't trade my 93 ranger for a dozen of the old ones.

You'r right! pretty hard to keep up to the repairs and rust on an old one for everyday use. My most common sense vehicle was a 66 GMC with a 250 six and 4 speed. Rust finally ended it's life, there is nothing on the market today that compares to it.
