Any internal combustion engine is designed to fire at TDC. (+ or -). Most engines are timed on #1 cly. but some are not. You will have to determine which cylinder it is supposed to be timed on. Here is how to set it for #1 cyl....Rotate engine till #1 intake valve opens and closes, verify that the piston is now on TDC, verify that BOTH valves are fully closed. Now install timing gear so distributor rotor points to cap tower of #1 CYL. After installing gear rotate engine TWO complete revolutions and re-check that piston is TDC, valves are CLOSED and rotor is pointing to #1 cyl... re-assemble and set timing according to specs.....
