Just my 2 cents here but about as common sense as you can get is an early to mid 90's Jeep Cherokee (Not the Grand Cherokee) with the 4.0 straight 6 cyl.
4x4, decent mileage and outstanding parts availability and if you look around a bit these can be found needing a bit if work for $800 to a $1,000. I got mine for $800 and put about $1,100 into it after it sat for 2.5 years.
Only has 92K on the odometer. Runs great, uses no oil and the not rusted out. Inside still smells kind of bad from sitting all closed up for that time.
Overall cheap 4x4 and easy to work on.
