I just bought an old Chevy C50. I would like to know what the VIN is telling me and where to find any stamping of the engine to see what engine I have..it is some form of a 6 cyl with 4 speed combo (believe that is a C4). New to trucks but love the tractors so can someone give me some leads
thanks

Here's a chart from the service manual for 1965-66 Chev and GMC trucks (it's from GM Canada so may not be applicable). Back then the motors were color coded. If it's a 292 it'll be green (assuming it's the original motor).

You may have to save the attached picture to your picture file then enlarge it to read it. Picture size is limited on this forum.

if it has the 292, look at the side covers on the side of the engine, which cover the area where the lifters are, the 292 has 2, each covering the lifters for 3 cylinders, all other chevy 6's have some form of 1, covering the whole set of lifters

Ok thanks for that tip I will check later tonight. Does anyone however have a chart or link that I can use to decode the VIN?

What year, if later than 62, the engine would be a 292, if older either a 235 or 262. A c4 trans is a ford automatic.

So seller told me 1966 and was a C50- but the VIN tag was seperated from the truck so I am really wanting to get the real story - where can I lookon the truck?
