Engine is not charging. How can I tell if it is the voltage regulator or the alternator?

Find the wire marked Field on the Alt or the Reg.

Using a jumper wire from Battery Pos. post or any

Known battery power, momentarily apply power to the field wire

While engine idling.
If it charges the Reg. is bad or wiring issue.

If it don't charge the Alt. is bad.

Don't hold the wire on too long because it makes
The Alt put out full charge (Voltage).

Pull the alternator off and take it to an auto parts tore they will test it for free. If it shows good buy a V.R.

With the engine running, lay a screwdriver on the metal plug at the back of the alt, if you get a good magnetic pull, the alt is working.
