Bending a shift lever??

My tilt'cab has the dumbest shifter in it. It's on a pod above engine, with long linkage to trans. Can you say "SLOP"? I couldn't get reverse, but now found that by over adjusting the link, but lost low first now the opposite side of pattern. Better no low that reverse, I guess.
In order to get reverse, the shifter ends up WAY down low, laying on the pod metal, can't really reach the knob. Even for reg gears, I've been just grabbing shifter halfway up shaft, knob is way too far to reach normal. SO, question is...
Looks like shift lever is cast, has mold marks full length. My idea is to heat and bend the lever about half-way up and bend it up almost 90%, so it's more like it would be in a standard truck, far as position. NOW, I have to shift and play with to keep it out of way of body when tiltiing too. Bending it would clear all that and eliminate both problems. Anyone ever bend a shifter handle? and if not, Why?
