If I remember correctly, Ford was still using a variant of the ' FMX ' automatic transmission behind the diesel engine in 88. Later they switched to the 4r70w trans. If it is a manual trans, it is the NP435. The 6.9 and 7.3 diesel engines used a unique bellhousing bolt pattern that was not comon to other Ford engines. So, if you have an automatic equipped truck, there is no gas engine that will bolt up to that transmission correctly. If you have a manual trans, swapping a gas engine in is as easy as finding a 351 or 460 with the bellhousing and clutch linkage and putting that in. The truck originally with the diesel is most likely over 8600 GVW , so there is no different emissions requirments for an 88 gas truck that there is for a diesel. When you look at the cost of finding a good running gas engine and changing the wiring harness on the truck to run the PCM and the fuel injection and all the other hassle and cost, you gotta be asking if it is less expensive to simply bite the bullet and repair the diesel engines problems. My guess is that it would be unless you just happened to have a suitable gas engine on hand with the proper wiring harness you didn't have to pay much or anything for. Unless you have broken the crank, you can probably buy the parts to do a basic rebuild on the diesel engine for about a $1,000 or less. My guess is that you would spend more than that converting to gas buying parts etc.
