My next beater truck will be a 1 ton, probably a '80s ford with a stakebed. A dual wheel truck seems to be more stable, especially when the front end is worn. Mileage should be about the same, although 1 tons are probably geared lower which would affect mileage slightly. My 2 cents worth.
