You answered some of your own questions. You are buying a "beater truck" for under $2000 for a specific purpose. You are buying something that is pretty much worn out as far as daily commercial use, but that is not your purpose. As far as tires go if it has decent tires to begin with it is not likely you will use it enough to need to buy tires. As far as gas mileage is concerend you would have to drive it thousands of miles to make a major difference in cost. Pick the one that has the best tires and the least smoke. Brake repairs are more expensve for the full floating axles (hubs stick past the rim on the rear axle). All 1-tons and most 3/4 tons (excluding light duty 3/4 tons after 1979)will have this type of axle. If you have to go longer distances and may need to haul sheet material and lumber in the same load a flatbed will be handier than a pickup bed. Check with your insurance agent and license plate office to find out if there are major cost differences between the two. Are you looking for a daily driver until the house is finished or just a task truck?
