Before you commit to a one ton, it might not be a bad idea to reconsider a "heavy half" ton truck. Both Ford and Chevy made what they called "Work Truck" packages for half-ton trucks, in both 2-and 4-wheel drive, and most older Dodge's (from the mid-1980's on back) were built to take on a good size load. As long as the springs are stout enough, a half-ton can haul pretty much anything. That's been my experience, anyway.
