If the coil doesn't fix you up, suspect the pickup coil in the distributor. The distributor shaft has to be removed to replace this. Check for excessive wear in the lower bushing. Check very closely for cracks in the "star" you mention. Cracks there will not cause it to stall, but can cause engine-damaging missfiring.
