The 4 bolts main block only came later, on the 350 large journal engines (Camaro's in '67 and the rest of the Chevy car and truck line in 1968) From 1969 on up, two bolt's were standard on the 350, with only the truck, marine and hi-po 350's getting the 4 bolt caps. Even the hi-po '67 302 Z/28 motor used two bolt mains and the small journal 283 type crank, with the 4 bolt, large journal 302's not coming out until 1968. 400 small blocks came still later in both 2 bolt and 4 bolt block versionsand with even bigger main and rod journals than the 350 engines. As for replacing a 261 with a 283, why bother? The 283 will make more power, but at a higher rpm and not enough extra power to warrant the change. mart
