I ran across an interesting discussion on an Olds forum the other day. The talk was about GM blocks and quality. The conclusion was that older blocks were much higher quality cast iron with more nickel content. As you moved into the 70's and 80's, they used cheaper iron and the 4 bolt main was actually developed to compensate for the lower strength iron they were tapped into but marketed as a performance enhancement to hide the truth.
I can't swear to the validity of that but it sure sounds like it could be right.
