I have an 82 F-350 with a 400, it occasionally does the same thing. Mine is caused by the ignition switch. As it is cranking, slowly turn key back towards run position, if it catches, you need a switch. They are easy to replace, remove the two bolts that hold the column under the dash, lower the column a few inches and it is right on top. Good luck, email if you have any ?'s.
