WHICH TON AND A HALF?

[ View Follow Ups ] [ Post Followup ] [ Return to Forum ]

Posted by CHARLES on April 24, 2002 at 07:08:55 from (129.59.252.147):

Gentlemen,

I have been searching for a 1 1/2 ton truck to restore and use in hauling heavy loads. I am not a purist (shame on me) and I plan to modify whatever truck I end up getting by updating the engine/transmission to haul those heavy loads at highway speeds.

I thought I found the perfect candidate in a '46 Chevy 1 1/2 ton, but having never seen one anywhere other than a picture I was surprised to see how narrow the cab was. More than two people could never fit in there! I have seen 60s models of both Fords, Chevys, and GMCs, and they all appeared full-size, but they don't seem to have the charm of their predecessors. All truck makers in the 40s made vehicles which looked more or less similar, but were their cabs more or less the same size as the 46 Chevy?

I realize that the search is part of the fun, but I feel like I am wasting my time looking for vehicles which just wouldn't work for me. I (and my wife-she is getting tired of hearing about them) am getting frustrated in my search and hate to settle for a vehicle with a computer that won't let me work on it.

Thank you for your sage advice.
