The EFI engines came out in the fall of '86 in the restyled '87 models. I had a '78 and an '87. The '78 got better MPG in identicle trucks but the '87 started & ran better than the '78 ever would. The old Carter YF 1 bbl carb was prone to vapor lock & flooding, and the automatic choke would stick on. I replaced 2-3 fuel pumps and rebuilt the carb 2-3 times in 65,000 miles on the '78. I put 120,000 miles on the '87 in 9 yrs and never had a seconds worth of problems with the EFI. I think the '78 was rated about 125 HP and the '87 140 hp. Neither one was a rocketship but it didn't make much difference how heavy they were loaded they still accelerated the same speed. Stock there was no need to wind the tach over 3000 RPM.... They didn't go any faster at high RPM in the lower gear than they would at low RPM in the next higher gear. A cam change and induction system enlargement would have changed that I'm sure!
