Hi, sorry for being the bearer of confusion, but I bet you're glad I mentioned it huh? Those old trucks were never intended to go very fast, especially not the heavier duty ones. When I was just a wee little nipper my Great Uncle had a '47 I think KB 7. Thats a pretty big truck and top speed was somewhere in the '50s which seemed pretty dang fast in that but not really by todays standards. The nice thing about what you're planning is that either way you'll be replacing almost complete subsystems. So for the steering you'd be better off to get a whole front end off a newer truck and hang it underneith, of course you'd need all sorts of fab work to get it all together. Same for the engine, rearend etc. The same thing is true for the chassis conversion except in that mode all you'll need to do is fab up controls. Heres an idea, a used U-Haul truck can be had pretty cheaply, the E350 models are ton and a half with a gas engine. They say $4500 for the start. Then you sell the box and cab and get part of your money back. Of course you'll need to rebuild the trans, and since you want this as a keeper you'd want to rebuild the engine but the 460 is a powerhouse. If you wanted to go all out you could go all the way up to a C6000, but thats a bit big for what you say you want. Good luck!
