can I exchange?

I have a 1995 Chevy C-1500 pick up that is in excellent shape except for the rear final drive, it howls like a banshee. My Best friend has a 1987 Chevy C-10 pick-up. Except that his body and frame are rusted out and his engine (which is the same displacement as mine) we would like to swap the differentials. Is it possible, or will we be walking into a problem child every inch of the way? We are both fairly good wrench turners.
