The name binder originated with IHC, when Cyrus McCormick developed the first successful grain binder. The big deal about that was, prior to that, harvesting grain meant using a two handed scythe. The binder/grain harvestor, cut the grain, rolled it into a long bundle, and tied it with twine, Binder twine. A huge development in agriculture, which is where McCormick and later IHC got its start.
