Mike, The 700R4 is a good trans for running down the road empty but no good for heavy towing. I have a '91 GMC with 280000 kms, and the only problem I've had with it is the trans. It has a 3.73 rear end and I tow a 6000 lb. travel trailer. Had to rebuild twice. Always tow in drive and watch the tach to keep the torque converter in the lock-up mode as much as posible. When the converter is not locked it will jump about 200 rpm and this adds heat to the trans. Also, install a good trans cooler. Change the oil and filter in the trans often.
