For really heavy-duty, full-time towing with a fifth wheel hitch, the best way to go is a 1-ton truck with a diesel engine and an automatic transmission with a HD trans cooler and the biggest radiator you can get. My own loyalty lies with Fords, and their SuperDuty series are legendary when it comes to towing duties, but I've heard good things about the new GM diesels, also, and Dodge has been putting Cummins power in their trucks for at least the last 10 years. If cost is an issue maybe a used truck would be best. The thing with a diesel engine is that when they get 100,000 miles on them, they are just getting broken in.
