Carb) posted by Bob S. on December 21, 2004 at 17:44:50: The vacuum diaphragm connected to the upper rear butterfly ("AIR VALVE") keeps the air valve from flopping wide open when you mash the accelerator to the floor. It allows it to open slowly as manifold vacuum drops, and the fuel flow gets up to speed in the secondaries, which prevents "stumble". I can't recall the exact details, but I believe there is an offset or bend in the linkage rod that catches a lever on the choke mechanism, and pulls the choke open the specified amount under manifold vacuum at startup. The slot allows the "air valve" to move open and shut without the interferance of the vacuum diaphragm, at conditions of low vacuum. (Four barrels open.) Under those conditions, the amount the "air valve" opens is a factor of the air flow in the secondaries acting against the air valve, and the amount it opens is determined by the "air valve spring windup" setting.
