I had a 52-55?? (it was 6 Volt)F100 with the little BW designed, iron case automatic. I seem to remember that putting it in D would start out in second gear and go to third giving 2 speeds. starting in low and then shifting to drive would give three speeds. Also seems that full throttle starts in D would make it start in first gear so all three speeds were avalible.
Later (58?) when they added the extra sprag clutch and different valve body,it became the cruiseomatic which would use all 3 gears in D,even at light throttle.
