The nifty Jeep overdrive replaced one of the main gears in the transfer case with a planetary unit that extended out the back. It would run locked like the original gear or unlocked and spin the output faster. I had a CJ with the 225 V-6, 3-speed, and one of those overdrives. There just wasn't a hill you didn't have the perfect gear for. The input and rear output shafts in that transfer case are offset and that's why they could make it work. Most modern ones are straight through from the input to the rear output so they can't be done.
