I'm not a real Ford fan but if your friend never got another Ford because of that it's of no fault towards Ford. Having to put into low range 4x4 should have been the 1st sign trouble was soon coming - if not immeadiatley then soon in the future. A 1/2 ton truck isn't meant to be pulling those kind of loads. I'd also guess that truck rearends were way overgeared for good fuel economy which is why low range was needed. You can't overload anything that much and not expect problems. Just my2cents.
