The "umbrella seal" works just like it's namesake. It SHEDS oil. The ID of the umbrella seal will be snug on the valve stem, so oil doesn't get past, and the umbrella seal will locate itself on the valve stem. No need to worry about positioning it. When the valve opens the first time, the umbrella seal will hit the top of the guide, and the valve stem will slide inside it, and then the seal will stay at that point, and move up and down with the valve.
