1985 Ford Carburetor

HELP!!! I have a 300 inline 6 and the carburetor as basically come apart twice. I just finished tightening the screws up again, this time using lock tight, but now, I smell gas when turning it off and yesterday it used a half tank of gas after only going 50 miles. Help.
