72 Chev Shifter Problem

I have a problem shifting into reverse. It's the stock automatic setup. If someone pries the linkage from under the hood, it works easily. From inside, it won't lift axially, it's stuck. (not a loose pin) Something is wrong with the reverse interlock. What can be the problem? What needs to be fixed. Seems like it should be simple.
