I had a 1973 f 250 highboy that was supposed to be factory. It had 16 in split rims and a div.transfer case.It set up off of the ground quite a bit higher than a reg pickup. They also turn over easyer than a reg pickup. (hard lesson to learn).Totaled it out.
I bought a 1976 f250 new, still have it,and it is a highboy. It is set up the same as the 1973 that I used to own.It came out with a 360 4sp. It has 4-9 gears on one axel and the other axel is a 410. As far as the undercoating goes one of the selling points at that time was that they were made out of galvanised sheet metal on the front fenders and I think the cab is also. The truck has a lot of miles on it with a new 390 in it. ONE sure way to tell if it is a factory highboy is to measure the frame. The frame under the bed will be narrower on a highboy than on any other ford trucks of the same year. That dosent seem to make much seense to narrow up the frame and raise it up higher but ford people did just that.
