Thanks for all the responses.

It doesn't seem to be a hydraulic clutch after all, and a very quick (and none too detailed) look at the linkage suggests that the connections are okay - will look at it better in the morning. The clutch pedal returns to the start position when I release the pressure, though the pedal does seem stiffer when I step on it. No new noises that I can tell. The original owner (who kept it in a garage for longer than I've been alive) told me once that the clutch was some kind of conical design. Never heard of it, and I might not be remembering what he said correctly. Me dumb.

Anyway, I hope to get a better look when the sun finally pokes its nose from behind all the clouds we've been having here in ole St. Louie.
