Connect a 12 volt test light to the + battery post and then to the positive cable. A short will make the light glow brightly. Start pulling fuses to see if the light dims or goes off. Same goes with wires to the alt, etc. Check to make certain the hot wires are not touching ground where you changed the Alternator. Disconnect wires going to the Alt. or whatever component you suspect. The light will go out or dim signifigently when you find your short.
